Dear President:
James proposes to present
himself at your next examination
and go over the studies he has been pur-
suing at [Sherborn]. If he passes suc-
cessfully it will lift some of the load
that rests upon him and give him more
courage for the remainder. Will you
oblige me by advising as to the day
or days when it will be proper for James
to present himself?
It has always seemed to me that a

law school, with a course of Lectures, might
be easily and profitably attached to the
Vt. U & S.A.C, and that Roberts, Phelps,
Shaw, Ballard and others would be
willing to unite in the enterprise
with no other reward than such
[fees] as might be derived from the
students. If one or more star lecturers
should be required and they were
not to be had in the state, I
have no doubt they would come
on the same terms from places
outside of the state.
The only cloud that would
hover over this place would be

whether some of the enemies of
the College would not make
a noise about doing much for
the professions and little for
agriculture and the mechanic
arts. Let our friends ponder upon
the subject.
